12 May 2024 Happy Mother’s Day

How did Mother’s Day start? Mother’s Day, holiday in honor of mothers that is celebrated in countries throughout the world. In its modern form the holiday originated in the United States, where it is observed on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries also celebrate the holiday on this date, while some mark the observance at other times of the year. During the Middle Ages the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. US History says that on May 10, 1908, American activist Anna Jarvis held what is considered to be the first Mother’s Day celebration. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health, originated Mother’s Day. On May 12, 1907, she held a memorial service at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914, 65 years before Father’s Day became a Federal Holiday, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday.  There was a lot of resistance to Father’s Day, but never to Mother’s Day.

Part of the reason for that is that the true meaning of celebrating Mother’s Day is to honor Mothers.  Mother’s Day serves as one of the best days to convey our heartiest respect and regards to mothers. On this day, people should thank the mother for everything she does and the boundless care, love, and respect which She provides.

Of course, Mothers are important in the Bible too.  Mother is mentioned 320 times – 288 in Old Testament; Most of 32 times in New Testament are about Mother Mary.

Some examples are Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Another reminder of the respect due to Mothers is Leviticus 20:9 Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.

Of course, in simplest terms, it is expressed in Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” which is the first commandment with a promise  “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

But my favorite is Isaiah 49:15 God will never forget his children like a mother will not forget their nursing child.

Why?  Mothers are the ones who give us life, care for us, and guide us through the path of life.  God can be everywhere, but in God’s plan, He sent mothers to take care of us and our family. Mothers are truly the precious gift of God. Mother’s Day honors the core of motherhood. That gift doesn’t mean the person who gave birth.  It means the person who fulfills the role of mother.  This day is to show love and care to the mothers that they give us everything always. They chose the gift of life.  The place of a mother in a child’s life can be held completely by no other person, and her ability to continue giving is beyond comprehension. This day serves as a perfect example to show you’re your love for her and appreciation for helping you grow up as a better human being. Mother’s Day celebrates motherhood and the special mother in our lives because a mother’s love is pure and selfless in ways that cannot be expressed in words. God bless our Mothers today and always.
